Summer Day Camp, Grades K-6
June 23 - August 15, 2008
Camps are based at U-32, Berlin, Doty Memorial, East Montpelier, Rumney Memorial and Union Elementary Schools, with excursions to local swimming areas and great field trips!

Every week of summer, there will be camp! Camps will divide into age groups for activities when appropriate. We will begin our days with morning meeting and group games. We will travel to local swimming areas, like Wrightsville Beach and Elmore State Park, to swim and canoe. Along with core camp activities, each camp will have its own special theme, with games, projects, crafts, and field trips. (Schedule may be subject to slight changes.)

East Montpelier Community Connections
Site Coordinator: Guy Viens, 223-7936, ext. 305, gviens@u32.org

STARTING OFF: In an effort to better coordinate with the soccer program, we will again delay the start of our first session of after-school programs until Monday, October 1st. This will allow you to be certain of your child’s soccer schedule and/or other commitments that impact his or her participation in Community Connections.

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER: We realize, however, that many families rely on EMCC for their after-school care. Therefore, for August and September, we will be offering “KidCare” for K-6 Monday thru Friday, starting on August 29th at a cost of $6.00-$12.00/day. A healthy snack will be served each afternoon, we’ll have a recess break, and “KidCare” will consist of various games, cooking, art and other activities to provide your children with a fun and enriching afternoon.

COST: Our fees will remain the same this year. Our sliding fee scale is from $6-12/day. The higher end allows us to take full advantage of state subsidies. We ask that each family pay what they are comfortably able to afford within this range. If even the low end of the scale is too much, please talk to us about reduced rates. A limited number of scholarships and alternative funding options will be available, but, as we now have more limited federal grant funding, we will need to be more stringent in awarding these scholarships. We are also a licensed child-care program, so if your family qualifies, you are able to access the state subsidy program, which may assist in paying for your child to participate in our after school programs. If you are unable to pay, your first step will be to apply for these state subsidies. It is not a difficult process, and we have several families taking advantage of these subsidies. We will be glad to help you through that process when the time comes. If you do not qualify for the subsidy program, then we can look at our reduced rates and scholarship options. We want to make sure everyone who wants to participate is able, and we will work with you as much as possible to make it happen.

HOURS/LATE FEE: The after school program will run from 3:30pm until 5:30pm. Pick-up time is 5:30pm, and this year we will again charge a late fee. Unless prior arrangements have been made, if you are more than 10 minutes late (5:40pm), a late fee will start accruing at a rate of $5.00 for every 15 minutes, due when you arrive to pick up your child.

LAST CALL FOR SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION... It's time to get the paperwork in. Call Heather or Ginny for any last minute information at 223-3456.

NEW for SUMMER 2008! Swim lessons just got easier for working parents and kids eager to learn to swim!
I am providing transportation to the MIDDLESEX SWIM LESSONS at First in Fitness this year for Session One: (July 7-11 and July 14-18, 2-week session) Students may enroll in Community Connections day camps for these same 2 weeks. Camp will be held at Berlin Elementary School with late-morning transportation to the pool provided for our Middlesex kids who have signed up for town swim lessons through Alisa Darmstadt. Swimmers will begin their day in camp, leave for lesson, return for lunch and afternoon camp activities related to the theme they choose. Some  days we will bus to Wrightsville Beach for the afternoon. Campers could be picked up in Middlesex on those days instead of returning to Berlin, if this is more convenient. Check out the new yellow Summer Camp 2008 brochures as well the Middlesex Learn to Swim sign up sheet in your child's folder. Space is limited, sign up early. For financial aid, payment plans, alternative funding, contact Adam, Martha, Ann or call CC office 223-3456.

A FINAL THANK YOU and GOODBYE! It has been wonderful working with all your Rumney children over the past 5 years through afterschool programs like cooking and hip hop; vacation field trips to museums and pools; summer camp hikes and dips into rivers; and watching them grow up and move from the primary unit to the graduation stage. I am happy to be a part of this community that values our activities for our children and families. I am glad that our program can continue and the a new site coordinator has a great program to keep going. BACK TO SCHOOL in the FALL: As in the past, Morning Program and Afterschool KidCare WILL be available as of the first day of school starting at 7:00 a.m. school-day mornings in the Library with Sue Pryce and Robin Rattazzi.
