Homework Club offers academic support to kids in grades 3-5. The program provides assistance and a quiet, well-equipped environment to accomplish their work, including reading, math, spelling, social studies and more.
On Fridays, kids enjoy enrichment activities.

Doty Community Connections

Doty Memorial School is the setting for an exciting afterschool program for kids at the elementary level. We hope to inspire kids daily while they are adventuring, and immersing themselves in the fantastic world of learning. We also hope to be able to help them expand their awareness of themselves and the world around them. Each day will include snack, the organized activity they have signed up for and a 10-20 minute homework help time at the end as well as free play. We hope your child(ren) will join us for some days of fun and learning that they will always remember!

World of Clay– Wacky colored paper weights, weird bugs, beautiful baboons, and fairy princesses are just a few of the things you can create with this fun, flexible and amazing oven-baked clay called Sculpey or the air dry Model Magic and more.
Days: September 26 & October 3, 17, 24, 31. (5 weeks, one time materials fee* of $7 applies)
Tuesdays
Tie Dye – For you or as a gift, come experiment with colors and rubber bands to create long or short sleeved T-shirts, carry-alls and more with vibrant designs. Days: September 27, October 4, 11, 18, 25 and November 1. (6 weeks - Extra $13 materials fee applies to this class, includes 2 T-shirts and 1 long sleeve T-shirt! If you would like long sleeve tee shirts to replace one or more of the short sleeve T-shirts please add an extra $2 for each!)
Wednesdays
Space, Rockets and the Great Beyond – Do you look at the sky and wonder what’s out there? Do you know what a Space Ball is? We will learn about the sky and things we see in it through space kits and rocket building. The rockets will be launched in late October or early November, when weather is flight friendly. Days: September 28, October 5, 12, 19, 26 & Nov. 2. (6 weeks,- one time materials fee of $10 applies)
BINGO - Prizes and popcorn await you. Join us in an afternoon of excitement as we see who can find their BINGO numbers the fastest. Days: October 12 & 26. (2 Weeks) .
Thursdays
Guitar - Audrey Beauregard will offer students the basics of guitar, reading music and learning chords. We have a few guitars to borrow – first come first served - but most families will want to purchase their own for practice at home. Days: September 29, October 6, 13, 20, 27 & Nov. 3. (6 weeks)
Bubbling Experiments & More – We will become mad Scientists; trying to discover new frontiers! Join us in creating hands-on experiments with safe household ingredients. Days: September 29, October 6, 13, 20, 27 & Nov. 3. (6 weeks – one time material fee of $5 applies )
Fridays
Canoeing – Explore our local waterways, surrounding ponds, marsh-like areas and wood habitats. This is a great way to get out and enjoy the fall scenery and weather. Days: September 30, October 7, 14, 21 & 18. (5 weeks)
Miscellaneous
Face Painting - Let’s go crazy, become a butterfly or dragon! Transform into a clown, a witch, princess or rock star. Come have fun, play with your friends and have your face painted!

Art Cart (K-6)

Feeling creative? Well, Guy’s cart is loaded high– come spend some time making all kinds of neat art projects– something different each week! We’ll play with water colors and Sculpy, make fleece scarves, do some paper crafts, and make stamps and do some printing. Let your inner artist come out!
Sculpt-O-Rama! (K-6)
with Ramona Kacyvenski
Dive into the world of sculptural dough in this class. Each week we will make our own interesting dough and then sculpt with it. The doughs we make will be unique and wonderful. Half will be edible so once we have created a work of art, we can eat it! The others will be a tactile adventure into creativity making any thing from gifts to objects to use at home!

X-Country Skiing @Morse Farm (2-6)
with Sarah Kinter & Guy Viens
Each week we’ll travel by bus to Morse Farm or U-32 for a quick afternoon of cross-country skiing. We have equipment for you to use, including new ski equipment Mr. Sherwin purchased, but if you have your own and want to use it, just bring it to school each week.. It will be cold and you’ll be working hard, so we’ll reward you with some hot chocolate at the end of the day! There is an extra cost for transportation, so if possible, please pay $10-$14/day for this class.
Sledding & Igloo Building @Fairmont Farm (K-6)

We’re headed back to that fantastic sliding hill at Fairmont Farm, just across from Johnson Road. The bus will drop us off on the way to Morse Farm, and we’ll have the rest of the afternoon to slide, build igloos, enjoy some hot chocolate and snack, and just have good old-fashioned FUN! The bus will pick us up on the way back to school. There is an extra cost for transportation, so if possible, please pay $10-$14/day for this class.
Video Animation(4-6)
with Meredith Holch
Meredith is back! She has run this activity yearly for the last several years, and kids who have done this activity just loved it! Working in small groups, students will create a storyline, make original figures and backgrounds, and learn to use a video camera to shoot frame-by-frame animation. Students will also create their own sound-tracks. Each student will get a copy of their completed animated video. No experience necessary!

Card Sharks (K-6)

Playing card games can be so entertaining, and a great old-fashioned way to spend time with others. We’ll have fun playing old favorites like Go-Fish and Old Maid, some newer ones like Uno and Skip-Bo, and even learn some new ones. You might even have some favorites you’d like to share– bring them along!
Melting Pot (K-6)
with Julie Pryce-Kelley
Who knew you could have so much fun, and make so many neat things just by melting stuff! You’ll melt ingredients to make candles, soaps, and chocolates. They’ll make great gifts for others, but I’m sure you’ll eat the chocolates yourself!

Going in Circles (K-6)

Hopefully we won’t get dizzy on Thursdays, because everything we do in this class will be circular. We will make pizzas and donuts, play with hula-hoops and circle games, decorate some springtime wreaths for you to take home, and more. Come with your own ideas and we can work them in too!
Comics Club (K-6)

We all love reading comics but have you ever made your own? In this class we will explore and study a wide range of comic books for inspiration. Then we will learn about character development, imaginary worlds, page setup and text! Our goal will be to produce our own first comic character and story book that will be the start of some great creative success!

Snowshoeing & Outdoor Winter Games (K-6)

We’re so lucky that EMES is in such a beautiful setting, especially in winter. Some weeks we’ll strap on CC’s snowshoes and explore the fields and forests around the school. Other weeks we’ll play outdoors– things like Hide n’ Seek, building snowmen, and (shhh!) even have an occasional snowball fight!
Hip Hop Dance (K-3)
with Joni Calcagni ~ FOR BOYS AND GIRLS ~ 6 weeks only
Joni, owner of Joni’s School of Dance in Barre, has run a very popular Hip Hop dance group for us for the last couple of years and she’s coming back! (Yes, she uses age appropriate music and makes it work for all ages.) Students will learn technique, rhythmic skills, and dance steps. Come gain great coordination and conditioning. The class will focus on team building, creating choreography, creativity, and lots of fun! On the final day, students will demonstrate what they’ve learned by putting on a performance for Community Connections, parents and friends, and hopefully share at a Monday Moring Meeting. Please bring socks, sneakers, a water bottle and loose comfortable clothing. Joni will be back next session for the 4-6 kids!

Climbing
Come learn the basics of rock climbing! Together we will explore the rocky crags of Vermont and our neighbor New Hampshire. Building our skills throughout the season we will practice knot tying, route finding, anchor building and will get really strong! No Experience Necessary.
9th, 10th, 11th & 12th grade

Vinyasa Flow Yoga
Come practice yoga to focus your mind, relax and strengthen your body. Moving through a dynamic sequence of postures we will align movement with breath. Our yoga practice will naturally build core and upper body strength, and provide space for experimentation and fun! All levels welcome.

Welcome to a new age of fitness at MHS. All our hard work has paid off with a new and improved space to strengthen and move our bodies. In this class you will use a very unique workout to help improve teamwork, physical strength, mental awareness and have lots of fun! There are no fitness requirements or experience needed for this course. Students currently participating in a fall sport are limited to morning classes.

Each week we’ll explore a different way to write poems, drawing inspiration from all sorts of everyday things. Here’s an example of one of the kinds we’ll try, an 8-word poem (imagine bongo drums to accompany it): Let’s get down and write some poetry. Groovy.

We’ll try a little of everything! Each week, you’ll pull a mystery activity out of the bag. Will it be creating your own obstacle course? A team game? A physical challenge? Only the bag will know…

Swimming at First in Fitness (K-6)
Limited space – first come, first served! Enjoy a splashing good time in the pool! Ride the bus from school to First in Fitness in Berlin. Snack will be provided once we get there. Certified lifeguards will provide shallow and deep end supervision. Pick-up will be promptly at 5:30 pm at First in Fitness in Berlin. Chaperones needed!! There is an additional $14/child transportation fee for the session. You must complete the attached swim forms in order to participate.
BKB Classes (Big Kid Bash) for Grades 3-6** January 3-February 24
**These programs are partially funded by a grant from the Children’s Trust Fund to help us figure out how we can best serve kids in grades 4-6. With the help of Ms. Dion and the 4-6th graders, we have done some research that has informed what to offer and how to structure our day. There is limited space in these programs (10 spots in each), and preference will be given to kids in grades 4-6. 3rd graders who are interested in taking these classes will likely be able to do so, but we may have to put them on a waiting list. Thanks for understanding!

You’ll have time to go out and explore the Rumney grounds on skis! You may use the nature trail, the fields or a combo of both. You can use school skis or bring your own. We might even play some games on skis. Whatever we do, you’ll get some exercise and have some fun. **This group will also have an hour to do Homework/Creative Academics from 4:15-5:15.

During this class, you’ll work as a group to choose a cause, plan a fundraiser, and carry it out! You’ll be in charge of all aspects of fundraising, including marketing/advertising, setting fundraising goals, and keeping track of funds raised. All money will go to the cause of your choice!

Have you ever wished for extra time in art class? **These groups will also have an hour to do Homework/Creative Academics from 4:15-5:15.

Spend some time in the Rumney kitchen making delectable treats! You’ll get to cook and sample a bunch of Rumney specialties. You might even have a chance to test out some new recipes that will show up in Healthy Snack or Rumney Lunch! (Cooking class participants will not have a chance to do homework unless they switch into Homework Club for the day, which is always an option!)

BKB EXPLORATION PROPOSALS: If you are in 4th-6th grade and you have an idea for an exploration you’d like to see us run as a BKB offering, you will be able to submit a proposal for consideration. Look for more information in January (OR speak to Julia, Ms. Dion or one of your BKB representatives!) * When we send out paperwork for the EXPLORATIONS, you’ll be able to sign up by the “SET” (2-4 days of program, depending on the offering). If you sign up for a WHOLE SESSION now, you’ll be signed up already!

Mellow Flow/Hatha Basics
Mondays 6-7:15 p.m.
An all levels class that will focus on the 37 (or so) poses identified by Iyengar as the building blocks of a strong asana practice. This class will flow gently and focus on alignment. Great check-in for more advanced students.
Intermediate Flow
Thursdays 6-7:30 p.m.
This class is for those who have developed a strong familiarity with the primary series and are ready to move into a deeper practice. At least 6 months of dedicated practice is recommended before taking this class.
