*Fees: Resident / Non-resident Fees: Due to financial needs, we have put into place a higher fee for participants residing outside of the Montpelier and Washington Central School Districts (Berlin, Calais, East Montpelier, Middlesex, Montpelier and Worcester). The reasons for this are twofold. First, the population we serve under the terms of our grant are students of these two school districts. Second, the local schools support our activities with in-kind contributions of staff time and facility use, the cost of which are absorbed by local taxpayers. The non-resident fee reflects an additional 20%.

Introduction to Computer Science

How to write, speak, and think in the language of machines.
A new two-week summer course offered through Community Connections
Noah Warnke, instructor
For middle and high school students and adults
July 19-23 & July 26-30, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm at U-32
Bring a bag lunch.

We all use computers as an essential part of our daily lives. Have you ever wondered, though, what it's like to *make* computer programs instead of just *use* them? This course is intended for anyone who wants to learn more about the art and science of programming, with a focus towards beginner and intermediate levels. We will cover a wide variety of topics, from the history of computers, to mathematical concepts important to computer science, to how to come up with algorithms (sets of instructions) that make a computer do exactly what you want. Impress your friends and family with your own computer programs, save time on homework assignments or work, improve your math skills, and more! Students will learn concepts through a combination of lectures, individual computer time, and group projects (which may include making computer games, if there is interest.) Course credit may be offered on an optional basis. All computers and necessary software will be provided.
Fee: $150 for both weeks.
For information on need-based tuition assistance, contact Community Connections.
Noah Warnke is a computer science major at Cornell University. He graduated from Montpelier High School and wants to share his passion for computer programming with his home community.

Perhaps you will even be able to get two robots to race, play tag, or dance. This experimental workshop is built around a new visual and interactive robot programming language called Tertl which enables students to construct robot control programs on the first day. We will use this tool to look for new ways to help students understand core algebraic ideas such as variables, functions, graphs and inequalities, and to use these ideas creatively. This mini-course is part of an educational research study. There is an $80 fee. For information on need-based tuition assistance, contact Community Connections. Students will receive a $15 stipend for full attendance Tertl Studos is a small company based in Montpelier VT and specializing in mathematical and computational tools for learners. Development of its robotics programming workshop is funded by a National Science Foundation small business research grant.

Community Connections at Union Elementary
Site Coordinator: Beth Stafford, 225-8259

Community Connections has run afterschool programs at UES since 2001 and will continue to do so, in an expanded format to provide the coverage that many families need. We will provide programs Monday through Friday for extended hours daily, and will have additional staff to serve greater numbers of kids. Ellen Bloom will remain as site coordinator.

Community Connections has provided afterschool programs in elementary, middle and high schools in Montpelier Public Schools and Washington Central Supervisory Union schools (Calais, East Montpelier, Rumney, Doty and U-32) for 8 years. We are an enrichment-based afterschool program, offering a choice of activities for multi-week sessions. For example, participants sign up for a 6-10 week theme activity class, which will meet on the same day of the week for the entire session. They may choose a different course each day to cover all or part of a week.

A typical daily schedule includes snack, recess, theme activity, and down-time – games, art projects, etc. Community Connections will coordinate with UES homework club.

Community Connections is in the process of licensing the UES program with the Child Development Division so state childcare subsidies will apply.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns or suggestions. For the month of September, we will have a daily sampler of activities. Regular schedules with theme activities will begin September 28 and there will be regular kid care until then.

All programs meet in the cafeteria directly after school. Pick up is in the cafeteria.

U-32 Community Connections

Paul Dayton returns as Site Coordinator for Community Connections Afterschool Program at U-32 this year. He brings a strong history of working with children and organizing fun and enriching activities. Contact him at 229-0321, ext. 2242.

Community Connections is once again up and running at U‐32! We have a number of programs going and many more planned. We want more kids to get involved! Students (and parents) should know that there is always something enriching, fun and supervised to do after school. Please feel free to contact us with questions, concerns and ideas.

How to find out about what is being offered or sponsored by Community Connections:

Most of our activities are free and on‐site at U‐32. Sometimes, we go off‐campus (mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, skiing, etc.); this requires a CC permission slip and a Community Connections Registration form. Registration is a once‐a‐year thing and is good for all of our off‐campus activities. Forms can be downloaded at www.communityconnections.us.

Want to help? We are looking for interested parents and students to join our Community Connections Site Council. Council members help with advice and ideas about programming, staffing and implementing our programs. We would meet once a month, and occasionally via technology.
